The Kanyigo Museum was established through the dedicated efforts of heritage and development stakeholders in Kanyigo Kuu Ward, under the leadership of Dr Ndagalaa. The museum was officially opened on 30 th November 2021 with the primary aim of preserving,conserving, and transmitting the rich history of the ancient Buhaya community to present and future generations.The museum showcases key aspects of Buhaya heritage, including the history of iron smelting,making and use of pottery, innovations in local agricultural and processing technologies(machines), and the community’s long-standing cultural practices for conserving the surrounding environment.
Location of the Museum:
The Kanyigo Museum is located in Kanyigo Kuu Ward, Missenyi District, Kagera Region, in northwestern Tanzania (S01° 02' 41.0", E031° 45' 30.7"). Geographically, Kanyigo Kuu lies between two significant natural features: Lake Victoria to the east, extending toward Uganda and the Kagera River Basin to the west, also bordering Uganda.The area consists of remarkable archaeological and heritage sites, notably the Kyabarongo and Nyabugaro rockshelters, which are situated on the western side of Kanyigo Kuu overlooking the Kagera River Basin.

To create a museum that meaningfully reflects and engages with the everyday lives of the Kanyigo Kuu community.

To ensure that cultural heritage is owned, valued, and sustained by the present community of Kanyigo kuu.
